October 2: Baltimore
Poe then rekindled his romance with the recently widowed Elmira Shelton. Alcohol was the most prominent aspect of his life at this time. Poe disappeared for a few days, to be found on October 2, 1849, wandering the streets incoherently and dressed in clothes that were not his. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain shrouded in mystery and speculation. Various theories, including alcohol poisoning, drug overdose, and even foul play, have been proposed, but the truth remains elusive. He was taken to the hospital. He gained consciousness briefly on October 7, and his last words were “God help my poor soul”.
