Edgar Allan Poe slavery statement

The 5th Poetry Downtown Festival is canceled—unable to proceed as Drive Music Publishing didn't grant us the copyrights to celebrate the extraordinary life and work of 'Warrior Poet'.

I am aware that Edgar Allan Poe was raised in a household which profited from the institution of race-based slavery. I don’t know if Poe himself ever enslaved people.

I made this statement after I found in the Enoch Pratt Free Library bill of sale for Negro slave named Edwin sold by Edgar, agent for Maria Clemm, at December 10, 1829, recorded December 29, 1829.

It’s important to know that Maria Clemm was Edgar Allan Poe’s aunt and at that time or shortly after became also his mother-in-law.
